Compositional Trends among Iid Rons; Their Possible Formation from the P- Rich Lower Magma in a Two-layer Core
نویسنده
چکیده
Introduction. It was previously known that S contents were low in the two volatile depleted magmatic iron-meteorite groups IVA and IVB. Group IID, with 21 members, the fourth largest magmatic group, also has a low S content but has high contents of other volatiles. We suggest that this surprising juxtaposition is best understood by two episodes of core formation, with the IID irons forming from the high-temperature, high-P inner magma. We gathered INAA data for 19 IID irons, 18 of which were not previously studied by this technique. The data confirm previous studies showing that the IID irons formed by fractional crystallization. Evidence of a low S content in group IID. Two kinds of evidence indicate low S in the initial IID magma. 1) Buchwald [1] called attention to the low S contents observed in sections of IID irons. The observed amount of FeS in irons reflects a combination of the degree of melt trapping and the S content of the melt. If we assume that, on average, the degree of melt trapping is similar in the magmatic groups, then one can conclude that a group that has uniformly low modal FeS contents had a low S in the parental magma.

The studied area is located in the north-east of Ardestan in Isfahan province. In Iran’s geological classification it lies in the central Iran zone. The volcanic rocks of the Kuh-e Dom area are predominantly rhyolite, rhyodacite, dacite, tuff, ignimbrite, andesite, banakite and basaltic-andesite. The major rock–forming minerals are quartz, plagioclase, alkali feldspar (orthoclase, albite), amph...
متن کاملMagmatic Interaction as Recorded in Texture and Composition of Plagioclase Phenocrysts from the Sirjan Area, Urumieh-Dokhtar Magmatic Arc, Iran
Tertiary andesitic basalts of the Sirjan area, Urmieh-Dokhtar Magmatic Arc, Iran, contain plagioclase phenocrysts enclosed in a matrix of amphibole, clinopyroxene and rare olivine crystals. Textural and compositional evidence suggests two significantly different types of plagioclase phenocrysts occur in the andesitic basalts. The most common type of plagioclase phenocrysts have zoning patterns ...

Textural and Geochemical characteristics of plagioclase phenocrysts in Andesitic and basaltic rocks of Bazman volcano (from Makran volcanic arc) show evidence of interaction between basaltic and andesitic magmas. Plagioclase phenocrysts in andesites and basalts are composed of three major parts of core, mantle and rim, with similarity of the anorthite contents in cores and mantles. The cores of...
متن کاملRecycled oceanic crust in the Hawaiian Plume: evidence from temporal geochemical variations within the Koolau Shield
The subaerial surface of Koolau volcano is composed of lavas that define the distinctive endmember composition for Hawaiian shield lavas, known as the Koolau component, now designated as the Makapuustage. The geochemical characteristics of lavas recovered by the Koolau Scientific Drilling Project (KSDP) show that this distinctive composition forms a <300-m thick veneer. Below this veneer, from ...
متن کاملThe IIG iron meteorites: Probable formation in the IIAB core
The addition of two meteorites to the iron meteorite grouplet originally known as the Bellsbank trio brings the population to five, the minimum number for group status. With Ga and Ge contents in the general ‘‘II” range, the new group has been designated IIG. The members of this group have low-Ni contents in the metal and large amounts of coarse schreibersite ((Fe,NI)3P); their bulk P contents ...
